Font categories

Every typeface falls into a family. Here is what each one means.

Display

A display typeface is intended for use at large sizes for headings, rather than for extended passages of body text.

Monospace

A monospaced font, also called fixed-pitch or fixed-width, is a font whose letters and characters each occupy the same amount of horizontal space. This contrasts with variable-width fonts, where the letters and spacings have different widths.

Sans

A sans-serif letterform is one that does not have extending features called serifs at the end of strokes. Sans-serif fonts tend to have less stroke width variation than serif fonts and are often used to convey simplicity, modernity, and minimalism.

Script

Script typefaces are based upon the varied and often fluid stroke created by handwriting. They are generally used for display or trade printing, rather than for extended body text.

Serif

A serif is a small line or stroke regularly attached to the end of a larger stroke in a letter. A typeface making use of serifs is called a serif typeface; one that does not is a sans-serif typeface.
